Q&A

12:30 – 2:00 Lunch  (not provided but there are options nearby. We can eat on site, including in the gardens)

Afternoon, 2:00 – 4:00 A riparian walking tour of Shrewsbury, led by Penny Ward & Roger White. Meet outside the venue. One of the reasons why Shrewsbury is such a well-preserved medieval town is that it is constrained by the banks of the river Severn. This walk will take us first along the River Severn into Longden Coleham, a former industrial suburb of Shrewsbury encompassing the extant steam-powered sewage pumping house, the site of Hazeldine’s iron foundry, a converted brewery and the site of a lead works. Crossing at Kingsland bridge (some steps and an uphill then downhill dogleg) we will then follow the river bank on the Shrewsbury side to the Castlefields footbridge Here we will cross over to the other side and then back to Abbey Foregate past the site of the old Gay Meadow football ground. The walk is mostly on level ground so, unlike Shrewsbury town centre, you won’t be toiling up hills.

Saturday 11th July 2026 – Offa’s Dyke, Knighton

Saturday 11th July 2026 – Offa’s Dyke, Knighton. We will meet at 2.00pm at the Offa’s Dyke Visitors Centre carpark on West Street, Knighton, Powys, LD7 1EN. We will first walk around the indoor display that provides a history of the dyke and how it was constructed. Guides from the Centre will be on hand to provide further background information and to answer questions. After this we will take a look at the small section of the Dyke immediately behind the centre. There is no cost to enter the visitor centre, but donations would be welcomed! After this, for those interested, we will drive to an extensive section of the Dyke close to the B4355 for a short walk along it accompanied by Prof Keith Ray who will provide us with some fascinating insights to the history and archaeology of the Dyke. (Here is the Google maps link for the carpark on the B4355 : https://maps.app.goo.gl/vhsmMQEZoCd8AcpW6, What3Words: relate.rivals.mermaids). Limited parking is available here so we might decide to car-pool before we leave Knighton. There are toilets and a tea-room at the Visitor Centre. Meet at 2.00pm at the carpark at the Offa’s Dyke Visitors Centre, West Street, Knighton, Powys, LD7 1EN.

The tour will take in the four ancient minster/parish churches, three friaries, at least two non-parochial chapels with their cemeteries, the Non-Conformists with burial grounds and the ‘illicits’ – corpses found around town down the years! We expect the walk to take around 90 minutes and for those interested we will visit the King’s Head (Mardol) for a drink and a look at the 14th century wall painting afterwards. Adult themes! Meet at 2.30pm at St Mary’s ChurchSt Mary’s Street, Shrewsbury, SY1 1DX

Saturday 9th May 2026 – Medieval Clun and Museum tour.

Saturday 9th May 2026 – Medieval Clun and Museum tour. Meet at the highest part of the castle at 2pm. Nigel Baker will lead the group around the castle and provide some fascinating insight into its construction and history. He will then walk the group into town, pointing out the borough defences and the borough’s original layout. The walk will conclude at the town museum for a look at its local history collection. There is no cost to enter the museum, but donations would be welcomed! (As the climb up the castle is quite steep, please could those who might not be able to manage it wait by the bowling green at the base of the castle and Nigel will meet you there once the group descends.) Please note: Do NOT park at the castle carpark – this is very small and intended just for castle visitors. Please park at the larger free carpark north of the town at the Memorial Hall and walk to castle (it is not far
and an easy walk). Here is the Google maps link to the Memorial Hall carpark: https://maps.app.goo.gl/MvR4BCaJ7N Meet at 2.00pm at the highest part of Clun Castle, Newport Street, Clun, SY7 8JT

FLOREAT SALOPIA – A Celebration of Shropshire’s History and Archaeology

FLOREAT SALOPIA – A Celebration of Shropshire’s History and Archaeology

100th volume of the Transactions of the Shropshire Archaeological and Historical Society

To mark the 100th volume issue of the Shropshire Archaeological and Historical Society’s Transactions, we have commissioned a collection of new research papers into Shropshire’s archaeology and history. This volume offers snapshots of Shropshire’s past, from the earliest prehistory to the end of the twentieth century. It presents both archaeological and historic perspectives and demonstrates the importance of the county in the wider context of the United Kingdom. This is the first comprehensive overview of Shropshire in over 50 years, showcasing the research going on in the county.
