The author deals with such issues as field types and sizes, shapes, configurations, geographical positions, and the conditions of the soil, before launching into the largest part of the book, a treatment of the origins of field-names under twenty-one headings, such as woodland names, farm crops, industry, birds, legal, sports and pastimes. The book concludes with a name index and a parish index.
